Photographs produced with photographic alternative processes

Van Dyke Brown

VAN DYKE BROWN, is a monochromatic process of photographic reproduction through a contact print on a chemically prepared surface. The VDK technique was firstly presented in 1842 by the astronomist Sir John William Herschel (1792-1871) two months after the official announcement of the cyanotype process invention. The VDB process patented in Germany in 1985 by Arndt and Troost is one of the simpler kallitype techniques. VDB images are created by a contact print process that involves an exposure time of 5 -15 minutes to UV light (alkaline thick paper, but also other materials) of a negative the same size as the finished products. The result obtained through oxidation process is a white- light brown print image or rich-brown image while using chemical toning with non-toxic substances. The technique was named after the Baroque painter Anthony Van Dyke due to the colour of the photographs resulted. The product obtained is stable in time and it is not subject to wear and tear.

Cyanotype

CYANOTYPE is a monochromatic process of photographic reproduction through a contact print on a chemically prepared surface, invented and named by the astronomist Sir John William Herschel (1792-1871) in 1842. The technique was initially used to copy drawings and to produce photograms. It is a contact print process (the negative is the size of the finished product) and the exposure is made with UV light for 15 minutes to 45 minutes (alkaline thick paper, but also other materials). A photographic negative or flat objects can be used in order to obtain a cyanotype. The result obtained after an oxidation process is a white- Prussian blue image or a white-brown image while chemically toned with non-toxic substances. The Prussian blue is a synthetically made colour invented in error in 1704 by Diesbach in Berlin. The product obtained is stable in time and it is not subject to wear and tear.

If a print fades due to environmental conditions, it should be placed in the dark and it will naturally re-oxidize back in a few weeks back to blue.
